The latest issue of Famitsu features a couple of pages dedidcated toward MEVIUS FINAL FANTASY, the upcoming smartphone game that will be hitting Japan this spring. The spread covers the Battle System, a reveal of a new character and some details regarding Summons and the composer of the soundtrack.
A character called Sarah Cornelia will be joining the cast. The astute among you may recognise the name from FINAL FANTASY I, however they are not the same character. They are both princesses though. In MEVIUS, Sarah is the princess of the royal family of Paramitia. She is the figure we saw imprisoned within the giant crystal in earlier artwork. The hero is known as Wol, short for Warrior of Light, and is currently stricken with amnesia. Only a mysterious voice is there to guide him. Perhaps it’s the voice of Sarah?
The Battle System is not a break-away from the norm for smartphone games. Commands are registered by tapping various abilities on the screen. In true FINAL FANTASY style, some enemies have elemental weaknesses, which will make quick work of them. MEVIUS also adopts FINAL FANTASY XIII’s Stagger system, allowing significant damage to be inflicted. Combining these two tactics is a must for progressing in the game. Defeating enemies will earn the player elements and other materials, used to develop Wol even further. As previously mentioned, Wol is also able to switch job classes, with Freelancer, Thief and Black Mage already being revealed.
Wol will also be able to call forth the power of Eidolons during battle. The Famitsu spread shows us art of Shiva, Onion Knight and Fat Chocobo, though it’s likely other staple Eidolons (like Ifrit, Bahamut etc) will also make an appearance.
All of this will be set to a score composed by Mitsuto Suzuki. Mitsuto has worked on the soundtracks for FINAL FANTASY XIII-2, Lightning Returns: FINAL FANTASY XIII and also contributed to the soundtracks of The World Ends With You and The 3rd Birthday.
SQUARE ENIX will be holding a special MEVIUS FINAL FANTASY presentation on the SQUARE ENIX Presents channel on April 2nd, 2015 at 20:00 JST. More details are expected to be announced within the next few days.
MEVIUS FINAL FANTASY is currently planned for a 2015 release on iOS and Android smartphones in Japan. No word yet on whether or not this game will hit the Western mobile market.
